Denial —the stage when people simply can’t believe that what happened actually happened. They say to themselves, “There must be some mistake. This isn’t really happening.” In a sense, they are in a state of shock.

Anger —when people get angry at the person who died or God or blame themselves or others for what happened. “How could you die on me?” “How could this be happening to me? I don’t deserve this.”

Bargaining —the stage when people attempt to negotiate a different outcome. Although a different outcome is usually impossible, it doesn’t stop them from replaying the “deals” over and over in their minds. For instance, someone who has been diagnosed with a serious illness such as lung cancer might be telling himself, “Just let me get over this, and I promise, I will never smoke cigarettes again.”

Sadness or depression —the stage when people allow themselves to feel the despair that is often inevitable with loss. They often feel defeated, and life can lose meaning. People can even feel suicidal.

Acceptance —when people finally accept that life goes on regardless of the loss. It doesn’t mean that you forget what happened or that you stop feeling sad, but the overwhelming feelings of grief fade. There is a recommitment to life and a refocus on the future.
